Reading are lining up an audacious raid on Liverpool outcast Joe Cole as the Royals start planning for life back in the Barclays Premier League.

The former West Ham and Chelsea midfielder spent last season on-loan at French side Lille after falling out of favour with ex-Reds boss Kenny Dalglish.

And the Berkshire outfit are hoping a deal can be struck to show they mean business by signing Cole back in the top flight after a two-year absence.

Allez! Cole has just enjoyed a season loan at Ligue 1 side Lille

Cole has two years left on his £70,000-a-week Reds deal, well beyond Reading's means, and so they will explore the possibility of taking Cole on loan for a season, according to reports in the Daily Star.

Cole's Anfield career seemed to be over, but was given hope of a return to Merseyside after Dalglish was axed earlier this week.

It is understood he is waiting to see who replaces Dalglish before deciding his next move.

The Royals have also been linked with a move for Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

Defoe scored 17 goals for Spurs last term, despite spending much of it on the bench and has indicated he might have to look elsewhere for regular first-team opportunities.

Red alert: Dalglish's exit could convince Cole to return to Anfield
