According to Goal.com, Liverpool will look to begin an overhaul of their squad by signing Fiorentina winger Juan Manuel Vargas.

The Peruvian international gives any squad vital depth, as he can play anywhere across the midfield and also cover in defence.

Vargas has been attracting attention from all over Europe. If Liverpool want to sign the Peruvian they may face stiff competition from Bayern Munich and Zenit St Petersburg.

With an £8 million bid from Bayern reportedly turned down, it looks like John W. Henry may have to part with a fair amount of cash to land Vargas. Would he be worth it?

While Vargas has the ability to play in many positions, he is undoubtedly most at home on the left wing.

This raises the question of why Liverpool would want to spend a considerable amount of money on that position a year after they paid so much for Stewart Downing?

Downing has not had a great season by any means, but lately the £20 million man has started to look slightly more at home at Anfield.

Bringing in Vargas may put the pressure on Downing to perform to a higher standard. At the moment there is no one waiting in the wings to take the former Villa player's place.

In 24 appearances for Fiorentina this season, Vargas has provided seven assists, compare that with Downing's zero assists in 31 games.

Vargas would bring some much-needed defensive nous to Liverpool's left flank.

It is no secret that Downing struggles when tracking back, he never looks comfortable when forced to defend.

In contrast to this, Vargas thrives in a more defensive role and has a great motor to marshal the left-hand side of the pitch.

Could the money be better spent on other areas of the team though?

Liverpool's recent desperate run of form has highlighted areas of the squad that desperately need reinforcing.

With Andy Carroll struggling, and The Mirror reporting that he may be on his way out of the club this summer, the number one priority surely has to be bringing in a goal scorer.

Bringing Vargas in would undoubtedly strengthen the Liverpool squad, who desperately need to do something to a squad that is in miserable form.

Perhaps competition from the Peruvian can help get the best out of Downing as well.

Liverpool fans, what do you think of Vargas? Could the money be better spent elsewhere? Or is he worth it?
