Vieira: Why the Gerrard debate?
20th Jun 2012 - Latest News
There was a time when Steven Gerrard forced himself to admit that he wasn't as good as Patrick Vieira.
Liverpool had won the 2001 FA Cup final but Arsenal, led by their French midfielder, could claim to have been robbed following a late Michael Owen double.
Afterwards, a young Gerrard reflected: "I learned a lot from the FA Cup final. I learned that Patrick Vieira is a lot better than me."
More than a decade has passed since that day at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium - and, having grown into one of the world's most complete footballers, it has been a long time since Gerrard has stood in anyone's shadow.
Now Vieira has decided the time is right to return an old compliment.
He said: "As a manager, or if you are one of the players, you are looking for a leader in the team - someone to show you the way. Steven Gerrard is the main man for England.
"I never understood the captaincy issue in this country because for me there is only one person who should be captain and that is Steven Gerrard.
"He never hides and I'm pleased he is doing well for the national team. England have something, they are building something."
