Liverpool Transfer News: Dirk Kuyt Right to Shrug off Return to Feyenoord

Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt will almost certainly leave Anfield this summer after struggling to remain on the first team this season, but that doesn't mean he should take a step back.
Kuyt believes that returning to Feyenoord is indeed a step back.
Kuyt, 31, told AD Sportwereld, via ESPN:
If I returned to Holland, I would have to take an 80% cut in my Liverpool wages. If you are 35 or 36, you know your career is almost done. But I'm only 31 and in the prime of my life. I still have two or three years left at the top.
Kuyt also said that he believed he had the "ambition and fitness to play at the highest level."

Kuyt is indeed a solid player that many top teams would want. His drop-off in production from the Eredivisie league to the Premier League was noticeable, but he was also playing with and against better players, and some players simply aren't cut out for the EPL.

It's debatable whether or not Kuyt belongs in the Premier League (he's scored 51 goals in 207 league games), but that doesn't mean he can't transfer to a top club outside the league. Like he said, he's still 31 years old, and neither his fitness nor his drive should be a problem. If anything, he's a nice option off the bench who could revive his career outside the EPL.
Kuyt is right to keep his options open and consider Feyenoord, given his position right now, but he shouldn't simply settle. He scored 71 goals in 101 Eredivisie league games. There's no reason to think he can't thrive somewhere else if he lands in a favorable position.
