As the summer transfer window heats up, Liverpool won't have an opportunity to be picky if it wants to improve on its disappointing eighth-place finish in the EPL.

That's why the Reds' interest in Wigan midfielder Mohamed Diame makes perfect sense (via dailymail.co.uk):

Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and Aston Villa have all shown interest in the Senegal international who is considered one of the bargains of the window as a free agent.

Diame's representative, Willie McKay, has confirmed clubs at home and abroad are keen on the 24-year-old.

It's understandable that the proposition of acquiring Diame won't set Liverpool fans' trousers on fire with excitement, but the Reds must stay realistic.

Acquiring Robin van Persie or even someone like Moussa Dembele isn't going to happen.

One of the biggest factors in driving big-name transfers is the ability for those players to compete in Champions League football. With this year's disappointing finish, Liverpool obviously won't play there next season, and the odds of getting there in the following couple of years are small.

Liverpool and Anfield both provide tons of history which should help make up for the lack of success this season. Don't be surprised though if the Reds lose top players to a squad like Tottenham this summer.

Diame, who didn't play much for Wigan during the second half of the season, is not necessarily a big name, but that's why he makes sense for Liverpool during this particular window.

He's only 24 years old, so he still has plenty of time to get better. He'll come as a huge bargain, add plenty of pace and creativity to the midfield, and still be able to drop back and provide solid defense.

He's technically listed at defensive midfielder because of his brilliant positioning and tactical skills, yet he's very solid at pushing forward if need be. At 6'0", he can also be a threat in the air.

Essentially, if the Reds can secure Diame for cheap, why not go for it?

Diame would be a smart addition for Liverpool.

When you have a down season and the bigger names are harder to come by, you have to take small, calculated risks in order to improve your club.

Diame serves as just that.

For a small amount of money, he is a low-risk, high-reward player. At this point, that makes him the perfect option for Liverpool.
