With the chase of Gylfi Sigurdsson's signature close to the end, Liverpool have to start thinking of backup options just in case the Iceland international chooses to play at Tottenham.

The Daily Mirror reports that Sigurdsson will make his decision within the next 24 hours.

So the question for Liverpool if they do not land the best thing to happen to Iceland since Eidur Gudjohnsen is, who do they go after in the transfer window?

That answer could be American midfielder Clint Dempsey.

As we all know by now, Dempsey had a career year for Fulham, as he scored 23 goals in all competitions for the Cottagers, and he's looking to make the next step in his career with a club that can offer European football.

There is no doubt that Liverpool have interest in the American and now that the Reds have American ownership as well, it could be the advantage they need to sign Dempsey.

Dempsey would be a huge improvement over what Liverpool currently have to offer on the wings.

Jordan Henderson was the player everyone thought he was, and all Stewart Downing is known for is that YouTube video that supposedly got him signed at Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers will be looking to bring in fresh new faces, and he does have the guarantee of European football to offer Dempsey, although it is only the Europa League.

However, according to NESN.com's Marcus Kwesi O'Mard, Dempsey will not be cheap, as Fulham will be looking to cash in on their star midfielder.

The chase of Dempsey does depend on the signature of Sigurdsson, but if the Icelandic star decides to go to Spurs, Liverpool should make a huge effort to lure Dempsey away from Fulham.
